Converting one- or two-family NYC dwelling to multi-family building

We have been getting more requests lately for information pertaining to the conversion of single or two-family dwelling units to multi-family dwelling.  Owners of single and two-family homes in NYC are frequently contemplating converting them to three or more dwelling units. Any building that has more than three apartments is considered a multi-family building. The conversion is regulated by the NYC Building Code. There are several items we evaluate. These include the following:

    • Zoning
    • Fire Alarms
    • Sprinklers
    • Elevator Installation
    • ADA (Handicapped) Accessibility
    • Construction classification
    • Multiple Egress
    • Filing an application
